Paper Kite

There were some warm, windy days last week and many sticks were blowing off the trees into the yard.  We had the spur of the moment idea to try making a kite.  So we gathered a few sticks, cut some thick paper, got out the tape and string and in ten minutes we had a kite!  I was really surprised to see that it actually flew.  The best part was the …

Dancing Deer

The very kind and crafty people at HowDoesShe recently invited me to do a craft for them.  I had just picked up a box of brads (the paper fasteners) and was excited to try making a toy with them.  So here is the result.  A funny little dancing deer.  If you’ve never used brads or brass fasteners before, then go to the store and get some.  They’re …

Paper Owl Mobile

I’ve been wanting to try a paper cut-out mobile and ended up making this owl.  It was an interesting design challenge, trying to make it look good no matter how the pieces spun, and the mobility gives the owl a lot of character.  I think I’ll put it in the kid’s room. I only used thread and scotch tape to put it together, …

Paper Dollhouses

La Petite Magazine released their new online issue today that features some paper dollhouses I made.  I had a lot of fun designing different houses and little pieces of furniture.  Then I put them all in a mint tin so they can be played with on the go.  If you want to try it out, you can look at my template below to get ideas on how to cut and fold …

Art Wrap

We’ve got a lot of birthdays coming up, so I thought I’d share my favorite way for wrapping presents, using pages out of my old art magazines.  I’m sure a lot of you do this sort of thing too.  I also like cutting little pieces of painted paper for decorations. p.s. The deadline for my book material is in two weeks!  I’ve …

May Day Flower Baskets

I had vague memories of weaving paper baskets for May Day as a kid, but when I started making these, the memories came flooding back. I love it when that happens. Making them is easy. Take a square piece of paper (I used some old magazine covers), and fold it into 9 equal parts (just draw a tic-tac-toe game and fold on the lines).  Cut out the corners …

Finger Puppets!

The kids got some new construction paper for a Christmas gift last night, so we made finger puppets this morning. You can see on their faces the excitement and wonder they had for the tiny puppets. They had a great time acting out really funny scenes and stories. A super fast craft with fun results!

Simple Handmade Books

I’ve seen little books like this all around, but now that I have a sewing machine I finally got to make some. I made the covers from thick art magazine covers, and then used a paper cutter to cut the pages. Then just fold the papers in half, and sew a line down the middle. Simple and very satisfying! It’s going to really be fun when the kids get …

Paper Animals

Yesterday my son and I had fun cutting out some scrap paper and turning them into little animals. It was really a fun way to use old paper. We kept making more and more animals until we had a full zoo. Here are a few of them.
